Step Landing
Renovation

Sept. - Nov. 2003

After many years of planning, the broken and hazardous concrete at the top of our stone steps was finally replaced.

Another yard of gravel slides into place for the foundation.

Pat Bongo got the ball rolling by providing workers and a truck to break up and haul away the old concrete.

A few weekends later, president Joe Vorel and Treasurer Michael Mackay prepared the new foundation, then brought up massive pieces of slate from Michael's back yard.  The stones had been salvaged by Michael and Len Czarnecki in 2002.

Photographer Casey DelliCarpini (seen here in shadow) captured the meticulous care of the workers.

Most of the slate was positioned with the help of the McDevitt's trusty hand truck.

Finally, on a late November afternoon, Tony and Paul Chi teamed up with Michael and Len to lay the slate in place.  Fred Taverna joined in the back-breaking work and provided expert advice on grading.

Thanks to the abundance of volunteerism (and thrift!), the cost for the entire project was kept below $500.

Our next great challenge will be fixing the path into the center of the Green!

Tony and Paul Chi position another giant piece of the jigsaw puzzle as Len checks for alignment.

A tired but happy crew takes a break with the end of a long project in sight.
