Thank you to those who have already submitted your 2011 membership dues in support of the Chester Park Association.  These funds are going a long ways towards our mowing costs during a wet spring and summer.  Click here for the membership list.
Our 2011 Annual Meeting for the election of officers was held on Sunday, June 12.  Minutes of the meeting are available here in PDF format.  Please check the CPA calendar for important events in 2011.  Participants welcome!
Last year's July picnic turned out to be an event that just refused to end.  Residents began bringing pot-luck dishes to the picnic tables around 12:30, and the last guests to leave were escorted by fireflies well after dusk.  A big "Thank you!" to the many hands and minds that contributed to this event, especially co-presidents Peter Balogh and Brian Veith, and VP Brian Valente.  Ann Willis Devert also did a great job with the traditional children's activities (this is her 18th year at the post).  And a final "thanks" to Hutchinson School Principal Mrs. Terrazi for providing the picnic tables on short notice.  This year's event generated over $850 in picnic fees and membership dues.  A great success by all counts.  [photos to come]
Middle School students in Chester Park are invited to the 2nd annual "Summer Solstice Scavenger Hunt" on the night of June 20, starting at 9:00 pm on the steps to the Green.  Bring flashlights and sneakers to scour the Park for cards earning iTunes gift cards in $50, $25 and $15 denominations.  [flyer]
Congratulations to our newly-elected officers for 2008:  Co-presidents Peter Balogh and Brian Veith, VP Brian Valente, Secretary Wendy Scott-Williams and Treasurer Michael Mackay.  One of the main goals set for this year is improving communication within the neighborhood - through frequent newsletters, email, and door-to-door contact.  Start now by sending your officers an email expressing any concerns or ideas you may have about our community. [click here For complete minutes of the annual meeting, click here.
Scott Stiefvater recently made a generous gift to the CPA Tree Fund on behalf of Stiefvater Real Estate.  Scott, a long-time resident of Chester Park, has taken both a personal and professional interest in preserving "Pelham's Best Kept Secret" as a unique community.  Scott's son, Ryan, is in his second year of providing landscaping services to the Association.  Thank you Scott and Ryan!
Our annual Association meeting will be held Sunday, June 8 starting at 6:30 pm in the Green, preceded by an informal wind and cheese social.  PLEASE attend this event to cast your votes for CPA Officers and brainstorm ways to improve our community.
Congratulations to CPA co-president Tom Martin for completing his first marathon on May 4th in a record time of 5:16:26.  Tom participated in the Potomac River Run at Alexandria, Virginia, and has plans for many more races in the near future.  Tom's tireless efforts as a CPA officer helped greatly in preparing for this event.
The famous Chester Park Fountain, documented in vintage photographs discovered in 2005, appears to have been a popular design. A slightly smaller version of the multi-tiered fountain can be seen today in the courtyard of the posh Metropolitan Club, located at 5th Avenue and 1 East 60th St.  [photo
In honor of growing enthusiasm for the Chester Park Egg Hunt, long-time resident Ann Willis has compiled a collection of "Egg Hunt Songs" written by her mother, Maggie, and herself over the years and set to the music of old time favorites.  Click here to enjoy lyrics of "Peter the Pink-Nosed Rabbit" and "I'm Dreaming of a Green Easter," along with other highly original Easter tunes.
It was a pristine day for the Easter Bunny at our third annual Egg hunt on March 22, 2008.  Top prize was a $10 gift certificate to Gingers, hidden inside a diamond egg.  But all the children were winners for their individual efforts in sweeping the Green clear of the 700 plus plastic eggs.  Kudos to Dawn Milanese, Joanie Terraciano,  Jill Quartararo and the every-friendly Easter Bunny for arranging the festivities.  [photos
Greetings to our newest neighbors, Denise Schulman and Scott Bedford, proud homeowners of 54 Linden, who have arrived just in time to see Chester Park in spring glory!
A "Thank you" to the Milanese family for taking on one of the Chester Park messenger routes.  We are always looking for additional volunteers to assist with the CPA's many Committees.  [more]
A record nine homes were sold in Chester Park last year (2007), more than twice the average from 2003 to 2006, according to Barbara McCann, realtor at C.S. McClellan and resident of Chestnut Ave.  Although selling prices increased only 2% on average last year, prices for Chester Park homes have shot up 27% since 2003.  It seems living in Chester Park is a sound investment in many ways.  To our new nine residents: "Welcome to the neighborhood!"

Congratulations to the winners of the 2007 Chester Park holiday house decorating contest:

11 Chestnut
89 Linden
67 Willow

Your artistic skills were appreciated by the entire community!

A determined and very wet crewe of carolers set out on the evening of Dec. 23rd to bring holiday cheer to houses around Chester Park.  Driving rains could not dampen the spirits of the group, who ranged in age from 7 to 70.  Jacque Padula, who organized the event, invited everyone back to her home at 38 Maple to warm hearts and hands by a glowing fire. [photo]
Santa came through on Dec. 15 for the traditional visit to our snow-covered Green.  Thanks to able assistance from Wendy Scott-Williams, Carol Melnick and Mary Waterous, hot chocolate and cookies kept the group well-fed and content. [photos
Freshly-dumped leaves along the Green greeted the season's first light snow fall.  The CPA and Village are pursuing options to place a "NO DUMPING" sign across the street from the offender's house.
WANTED:  Nice families eager to join our modest community.  There appear to be a record number of real estate opportunities in Chester Park this fall:  44 Maple and numbers 5, 44, 45 and 54 on Linden are all up for grabs at bargain prices, considering the priceless benefits of living within walking distance of our Green.  Invite your closest friends to discover Pelham's best kept secret.
The CPA would like to welcome the Mailberger family to the neighborhood.  Chris and Colleen recently moved in to 19 Walnut.  They bring with them two young children:  Miles, age two and five month old daughter, Eleanor.  We hope you have a long and happy tenure in Chester Park!
Congratulations to Bill McDevitt of Maple Ave. for his appointment by the mayor to chair the Pelham Zoning Board of Appeals.  A former president of the CPA, Bill has much experience in problem-solving and certainly has Pelham's best interests at heart.
Despite falling in the middle of the week, this year's Halloween was filled with wonderfully imaginative costumes, decorations and performances.  Many toddlers took to the streets for the first time, while teenagers and grown-ups alike couldn't resist the opportunity to have a little spooky fun.  [photos]
Curbside pickup of leaves started Oct. 15th and one resident's landscaper wasted no time dumping leaves and grass clippings along the Green's curb, despite repeated requests from the CPA and police to cease.
A word of "Thanks" to our CPA messengers who tirelessly deliver newsletters, flyers and notices to everyone's mailboxes.   For a list of the dedicated crew and their routes, click here.
Two stop signs have been added to the intersection of Chestnut and Walnut Avenues, making this an "All-Way" intersection.  Chestnut was the only avenue with no stop signs along it's 1/4 mile length, resulting in dangerous car speeds for pedestrians crossing the street to the Green.  Many thanks to Village Supervisor Richard Slingerland for coordinating this effort with the Police and Public Works Depts.
The traditional July picnic was held on the Green this July 14 with the usual fanfare of BBQ and pot luck treats.  A new hammock chair ride thrilled the children (and terrified parents) and the CPA introduced a tug-of-war event for all able-bodied members.  Special thanks to Lois Ciadriello for purchasing almost all the supplies and Ann Willis Devert for master-minding the games.  [photos]
The CPA has retained the landscaping services of Ryan Stiefvater of Maple Ave. to care for the Green on a day-to-day basis.  Ryan is responsible for a variety of pruning and clean-up tasks, as well as monitoring the Green for signs of mis-use (littering, vandalism, etc.)  Ryan is available for all landscaping work, including mowing, at competitive rates.  Contact:  740-3849   stiefvater10@yahoo.com.
Middle School students in Chester Park were invited to a "Summer Solstice Scavenger Hunt" on the night of June 21.  Sporting flashlights and rain gear, about 25 students combed the Green in search of four aces that had been hidden (along with the rest of the deck) among benches, roots and branches.  Congratulations to first-place winner Amelia Kuskin for finding the first ace and earning a $50 iTunes gift card.  Other gift card winners were Megan Wines, Zoe Mackay and Liam Taverna.  [flyer]
The annual meeting and election of officers was held June 10, 2007 on the Green with approximately 20 residents in attendance.  The wine and cheese reception was followed by a lengthy discussion of Association business under glowing torch light.  Congratulations to our new Co-Presidents Tom Martin and Peter Balogh, and Vice President Brian Valente[minutes]
Jill Quartararo of Linden Ave. is mobilizing Pelham residents to participate in the 5K Run/Walk & Family Fun Day to benefit the MINT Foundation, a not-for-profit that funds mental health research.  The Fun Day is scheduled for May 20, 2007, starting at 9:00 AM at the Bronx Botanical Garden.  For more information contact Jill at 738-0565 or visit MintFoundation.org.
Please welcome Alexander Karoly Balogh, weighing in at 8 pounds 12 ounces, who joined the Chester Park Assoc. on May 17.  Many of you have seen Alexander patrolling the park with big sister Eva (age 3) and parents Peter and Mary.  [photo]
Sheila and Patrick Gorham of Linden Ave. are the proud parents of a new baby boy, Patrick Roddy Gorham, born on May 11.  We look forward to many new faces at this year's July picnic.
The Chester Park Association would like to thank Gregory Vorel of Maple Ave. for picking up litter in Chester Park last Thursday, April 19.  Gregory is a member of Cub Scout Pack 8 and was performing one of the many Cub Scout activities that help our environment.
The 2nd annual Easter Egg Hunt was held Saturday, March 31 with a crowd of over forty enthusiastic youngsters. Once again the Easter Bunny made her magical appearance to hand out goodies and supervise the stampede of children.  [more]
A flurry of excitement swept through Chester Park as Santa made his traditional pre-Christmas appearance in a red color-coordinated fire truck.  Special thanks to the "Santa Committee" for handling three sacks full of gifts, and, of course, to Ed Hane for bringing so much jolly cheer to the community.  [photos]
A copy of the original 1890 survey for Chester Park is now available on line.  Careful inspection of the plan yields a number of curious details.  [more]
Halloween 2006 turned out to be a perfect night for trick-or-treaters of all ages.  Chester Park residents rose to the occasion by staging some of the spookiest and wildest decorations ever.  [photos]
The tail end of Hurricane Ernesto swept through Chester Park Saturday, Sept. 2, uprooting trees and snapping telephone poles. Many residents were without power for days as Con Ed and the Village struggled to restore damaged lines [photos]
The July picnic finally materialized one dry, beautiful Saturday in August.  Despite multiple postponements, neighbors turned out in droves to celebrate a break in the humidity and the splendor of our Green.  Special thanks to the Vorels, the Martins and Ann Willis Devert for orchestrating a fabulous community picnic.  [photos]
The annual Chester Park meeting and election of officers was held Sunday, June 11, at 6:30.  Wine and cheese preceded a discussion of Association business, including a number of innovations for enhancing our Park.  [minutes]
Eight historic photographs of Chester Park dated 1892 have been restored and published for the first time on the CPA website.  The DiNunzio Chester Park Photograph Collection, named for Michael and Pearl DiNunzio of 1 Chestnut Ave., captures the splendor of our community when a fountain graced the Green and tall urns stood on every column.  [more]
Jacque Padula was inspired by this spring's abundance of flowers to compose  poetry in appreciation of Nature's glory.  Some of her published work is reprinted here.
The First Chester Park Easter Egg Hunt took place April 15, hosted by the Easter Bunny himself.  Over 600 eggs (including 12 golden eggs!) were rounded up in record time, followed by prizes and refreshments.  [photos]
A new "Stop" sign has been placed at the end on Maple Ave. at Willow.  The intersection now has stop signs in all directions, making it safer and less confusing.
"No Parking"signs have been posted on the gravel road at the west end of the Green. This is a private road with parking limited to the three homes it borders.  All others will be towed at the owners expense.
Our Santa in the Park event for 2005 brought out record-breaking numbers of children.  Santa, who arrived via Pelham Fire truck, didn't disappoint them.  A special holiday "Thank you!" to our new coordinators, Carol Melnick, Mary Waterous and Wendy Scott-Williams, not to mention invaluable support from Ed Hane and Bill McDevitt.  [photos]
A Thanksgiving Day tribute to the organizations and businesses who helped in our walkway renovation project was printed in the Pelham Weekly.   The half-page notice was the least we could do to express our appreciation for our Community's support.  [notice]
It was a mild yet spooky Halloween night in Chester Park, as tricksters turned out in record-breaking numbers.  Residents rose  to the challenge by transforming the community into a haunted block party.   [photos
Paula Toglia of 44 Maple was startled one October afternoon when a century-old tree fell across the street, crushing her new Toyota and flattening her lawn and bushes.  The old maple came to rest inches from her house.  Two police cruisers quickly responded and Harry Pallet dispatched the Village road crew to clean up the mess within an hour.  [photo]
The Green narrowly escaped the intrusion of a utility pole and overhead wires from Con Ed. Unannounced to either the CPA or the Village of Pelham, Con Ed planned to put a pole inside the Green near the corner of Maple and Birch.  The CPA officers jumped into action and averted what might have been a huge set-back for preserving the natural beauty of our Green. [more]
The last step - all 400 lbs of it - in the Starbucks' walkway renovation project took place Sept. 24, 2005.  With a final bit of leverage, local residents tipped an enormous granite slab into place at the head of the stone dust walkway.  An enormous "Thank You!" to all who supported this effort from start to finish.  May our footsteps enjoy it for a 100 years!  [photos]
Please welcome Mark and Risa Link, the new owners of 11 Pine.  Mark is the Pelham State Farm agent (the office with the red awnings) at 225 Fifth Ave.   Congratulations to our new neighbors!
Heavy equipment and generous support from local suppliers and contractors resulted in a walkway renovation that exceeded everyone's expectations.   A fitting last-minute addition to the project involved 50 yards of top soil from the old Ingalls field, donated for the cost of delivery.   By Sept. 9th the project was one step (literally) from completion.   [photos]
The July picnic was held Saturday, July 23rd.  Evan Martin graciously volunteered to coordinate the event, which lasted well into the early evening.   The horseshoe "pits" were revived after an 11 year hiatus, followed by an ultimate Frisbee toss spanning the entire Park.  [photos]
A groundbreaking ceremony and work party launching the walkway renovation took place Monday, June 13th at 6:00 pm (severe thunder storms cancelled the June 6th event).  Starbucks manager Ron Walker became an honorary member of the CPA, and broke the first piece of old sidewalk with an engraved sledge hammer.  [photos]
The annual meeting for 2005 was held Sunday, June 12th at 5:30pm.  Officers from the 2004 year were re-elected and Association matters were reviewed over wine and cheese.  [minutes]
Dog pollution is on the minds (and shoes!) of many Park residents these days.  Read the May 23 Newsletter and visit the Members Forum for two of many recent complaints.  What do you think we can do to keep dog-walkers from spoiling Chester Park? [submit ideas!]
Walter Ryan, the eldest resident of Chester Park, is selling his park-side home and moving to Florida to be with his family. Those of us who know Walter will be sad to see him leave, and hope he'll return for many future Park picnics (Walter has graciously allowed us to store the CPA BBQ grills in his garage all these years).   Thank you, Walter!   [photo]
The family of George Gallo, postman of Chester Park for over 30 years, has donated a beautiful Autumnalis cherry tree as a memorial to George and a thank you to the community for the years of friendship. The tree planting ceremony took place May 21st, mid-Birch, and was highlighted by a tribute written by George's daughter, Diana E. Sacchinelli  [more]

Chester Park has been awarded a $5,000 Starbucks Neighborhood Park Grant which will be used to pay for renovating the walkway into the Green.  The project, sponsored by the Wykagyl Starbucks in New Rochelle and endorsed by both the Village and Town, utilizes the efforts of volunteers, local businesses and public agencies to enhance unique community parks such as ours.  Check for announcements regarding the kick-off celebration this June

 [Tentative timetable]

A warm welcome to our new neighbors, Hyun Joo Kim and her husband Seung Min Yang, who moved into 69 Maple this May.  Seung Min received his Ph.D from Yale and is currently a research associate at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  Their son, Kevin, is a fifth grader at the Hutch. and can be seen practicing baseball in the Green on many afternoons.
Lester Kravitz is the latest Pelham resident to join our Friends of the Park program.  Kravitz Realty is standing by to assist homeowners in selling, purchasing or renting properties in Chester Park.
Spring tree removal - A long-standing dead maple tree was removed from the Park by CPA treasurer Michael Mackay and Len Czarnecki.  Many thanks to the Melnicks and Jacque Padula for salvaging the branches for firewood, and to the Pelham Police for securing the crime scene with caution tape.   [photos]
Fresh snow and fleeting daylight turned Chester Park into a sculpture garden this past winter, lifting the spirits of an inflatable snowman guarding the Park steps.  [photos]

Santa braved an army of eager children awaiting his annual pre-Christmas visit to Chester Park on Dec. 18th.  Gifts galore (and delicious refreshments) raised everyone's spirits.  Deputy elves Angella Manning and Lisa Stiefvater outdid themselves once again.  [photos]
Our year-end holiday cocktail party, held Dec. 12th at the Daranco Town House, was a festival of edible delicacies and good cheer.  Special thanks to the Scott-Williams and Vorels for covering all the details, from ambience to babysitters.   [photo]
The Fall Cleanup was held Sat., Dec. 4th from 10:00am until 2:00pm thanks to clear, motionless skies.  The usual band of dedicated rakers (and one neighbor with a snow shovel) returned to make the Green spotless.  A warm thanks to all who cheerfully gave of their time and energy.   [photos]
The dumping of leaves, branches and even small trees in the Park has been greatly curbed this fall, do in part to improved vigilance among residents and police.  Only a few isolated incidents have been reported.    [photos]
After many years of deliberation, two hand-built benches have been added to the Park for the enjoyment of weary residents and visitors.  Constructed from salvaged slate and old dock beams, the benches emphasize sturdiness, safety and subtlety.  [photo]
Water, Rats and Poison - Major improvements to Chester Park's drainage system [photo] resulted in basement flooding and a deluge of rats.  Although the water table has receded, many rodents appear reluctant to return to their drain pipe housing as the cold weather approaches.  Residents are reminded to use extra care in placing rat poison away from children and animals.  Open rat baits were found behind a play house on Maple.  Residents on Pine reported their cat nearly died from recent poisoning.   Common sense and better trash containment will go far to reduce health hazards in our community.
Wendy and Nigel Scott-Williams have agreed to adopt a VW-size boulder excavated by the Town during recent storm drain improvements.  The boulder, sited at various locations on Pine, would have cost the Town over $1,000 to remove via private subcontractor.  Please make the Scott-Williams' new pet rock feel welcome.   [photo]
Street paint and other materials became the source of unusual designs on our summer streets.  By autumn most will have faded.  [photos]
John Hynes, a detective with the Pelham Police department, joins our expanding list of "Friends of the Park." The Friends program offers a way for businesses or  non-Park residents to contribute to the maintenance of the Green and participate in CPA events such as the July picnic and year-end holiday party. We are indeed honored to include such a model citizen as Detective Hynes among our "Friends."
Our annual July picnic took place Saturday afternoon, July 17.  Traditional grill favorites and beverages were supplied by the CPA, and neighbors brought an enticing selection of salads, side dishes and desserts for the potluck table.   Special thanks to the Martin family for making everything run so smoothly.  [photos]
The CPA annual meeting was held Sunday, June 13th on the Green followed by a wine and cheese social.  Election of officers, discussion of Association news, and plans for the coming year were all carried out in the brisk early evening air.   [newsletter]
Our 2004 membership drive was quietly  launched May 7th.  Special thanks to the 17 early birds who have already paid their dues.   [list]
Pelham's Fire Department made its annual visit to the Park this spring to train new recruits and flush out the hoses.  The grass greatly appreciated an extra drink, but a number of squirrels were totally confused.  [photos]
The daffodils and tulips in front of the Park were given a new lease on life thanks to  Wendy Scott-Williams, who spent two days cleaning out the flower beds.  Wendy is our CPA secretary, and wields her pick with as much authority as her pen.
Victoria Romano became Chester Park's youngest and prettiest resident this spring.  She's the second third-generation Romano to grace our community.  [photo]

Holiday lights proliferated like fireflies in time for Pelham's first snow fall.   [photo
Our fall cleanup went like a breeze on Nov. 15th as about 30 strong supporters showed up for a clean sweep of the Park.  Not a leaf or stick remained by the end of the gorgeous Fall day.  [photos

At the request of the CPA Officers, Police Chief Joseph Benefico asked residents of Birch and Walnut to cease dumping brush, grass clippings and leaves in Chester Park and along its curbs.  "Compliance with the law will help maintain the beauty of the park and make it safer and more of a focal point for all to enjoy." [full text of letter]
Political posters remain an eye-sore on utility poles in Chester Park long after the local election is over.  [photo and details
The owner of the neighboring Sanborn Map building wants to develop the land behind the building around the old water tower.  If his plan is approved we may see five or more multi-family houses built and a through-street connecting Maple to Fourth Ave.  This is cause for concern.  The owner has invited "interested residents" to an informal presentation Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7:00pm at the Map building.  We encourage all CPA members to attend.  [letter]

More dumping in the Park by homeowners on Birch Ave., this time bundled branches and what appears to be greasy charcoal.  After sitting in the grass for 10 days, the bundles were finally removed by a concerned resident.  [photos]
Andrew Jones and Sarah Engel-Jones have joined the Chester Park Community with all the enthusiasm of new homeowners.   "Hi!  We just moved into the neighborhood this winter, (on Pelhamdale Ave.), and we've come to love the park.  It was the first thing in Pelham that made us feel at home.  Our daughter even took some of her first steps there.  Thank-you for your care of this wonderful place."
Lost ferret - a pet ferret escaped in the Park last week (May 3) and the owners are hoping someone may know his whereabouts.  The ferret is light brown with black legs and is very friendly.  Please call (610) 872-5721 if you have any information.
